- Improving the health and well-being of underrepresented minorities through focused efforts in research, quality improvement, and institutional population health initiatives

- Actively recruiting a diverse community of learners, faculty, and staff into our CMH community through institutional policy, faculty education on recruitment, outreach, and our high school pipeline program
- Encouraging mentor relationships with existing minority faculty to support and retain residents and enrich the experience of faculty
- Educating our professional community on cultural competency to raise awareness of and dispel bias, conscious and unconscious
- Tracking and reporting metrics on diversity to better inform our efforts and to measure our success
Our Residency Programs & Diversity
Our faculty and resident program leaders recognize the important role diversity plays in creating a culture of collaboration and teamwork. We provide broad education for our residents on topics ranging from cultural competency to social determinants of health, and we work to incorporate these principles into scholarly work and the care of a diverse group of patients. We hold regular faculty development sessions on diversity to foster an inclusive workplace and raise awareness of implicit bias. We also believe strongly that a culture supportive of diverse providers contributes to optimal care for patients. We continue to look for opportunities to attract and support a diverse resident and faculty community and to support residents interested in expanding research or educational opportunities on the care of underrepresented and underserved patient populations.

DEI Journal Clubs
We host regular journal clubs in all of our specialties. Recognizing the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the care we provide, we incorporate DEI articles in journal clubs to provide safe spaces for impactful dialogue on how bias and racism have affected our patient and care community and to build trust among residents and faculty.

CMH Diversity Scholarship*
Graduate Medical Education at Community Memorial Healthcare (CMH) is committed to supporting the professional development of students underrepresented in medicine. We invite interested underrepresented fourth year medical students with financial need to apply for our CMH Diversity Scholarship program. Through the program, we offer an elective two- to four-week clinical rotation during which the scholarship student will be paired with both a faculty and resident mentor.
Scholarship includes:
- Up to a $3000 stipend to assist with documented housing/travel expenses
- Meals while on hospital campus
- Faculty & senior resident mentorship
This scholarship program is designed to increase diversity amongst our visiting students and residents by helping talented underrepresented medical students with financial need gain access to our outstanding programs.
Medical students eligible for and interested in our CMH Diversity Scholarship can apply to our 4th year audition rotation through the VSLO website (https://gme.cmhshealth.org/medical-students/application/). On the application, students should review the eligibility criteria and check the box indicating interest in the scholarship program. Instructions on submission and contact information are included in the application. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, March 25.
