Integrated Behavioral Health Postdoctoral Training Program

1-year Postdoctoral Fellowship

AGENCY DESCRIPTION

As a department of Community Memorial Health Systems Graduate Medical Education Department, the Integrated Behavioral Health training program places trainees in The Midtown Medical Group Residency Continuity Clinic in Ventura, California and within Community Memorial Hospital. The medical team is here to serve the people of Ventura while training the next generation of community physicians and psychologists. Postdoctoral Fellows will work side-by-side with an established group of physicians, along with resident physicians who are part of the Community Memorial Health System Residency Program.

AGENCY MISSION/OBJECTIVE

This clinical psychology postdoctoral fellowship is available to graduates of APA accredited Psychology training programs. This training program has been created to provide advanced systemic-based clinical training which ensures that trainees become proficient in delivering clinical services and professional support and consultation across a variety of modalities in a fully-integrated primary care setting. We are committed to preparing Trainees for dynamic roles as practitioners, supervisors, teachers and leaders in the field of integrated behavioral health.

DIRECT SERVICES PROVIDED BY POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS

During this training program, trainees with have the opportunity to learn and grow in their professional capacity by providing the following services:

  • Assessment and treatment planning in the Integrated Behavioral Health setting
  • Basic Individual Psychological Evaluation
  • Outpatient adult psychotherapy
  • Inpatient evaluation, consultation, and bedside support
  • Psychoeducational and Process groups
  • Adolescent/child/family cases (to be reviewed by Training Director prior to assignment)
  • Didactics on mental health topics for Residents (under supervision of Training Director)

EMPHASIS ON DIVERSITY

Through didactic training and supervision, trainees are encouraged to gain awareness of one’s own bias: self, others and the interaction as shaped by individual and cultural diversity (e.g., cultural, individual and role difference, including those based on age, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, sexual identity, disability, language and socioeconomic status), and context. Trainees are expected to monitor and apply knowledge of self and others as cultural beings, to understand intersectionality of identities as it applies to self and others, and to critically evaluate feedback and initiate supervision regularly about diversity issues with others.

TERM OF TRAINING

The start date is somewhat flexible (July-October) and will be set at the time the original offer of a training spot is made. The term of training is for one-year, full time from the start date.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION

Each Trainee is expected to spend the majority of his/her time on direct patient care. In addition to direct patient care, trainees engage in supervision, didactics, research, program development, and independent study.

Primary Supervision

Supervision is designed to provide Trainees with the opportunity to learn and develop into competent and ethical practitioners. Goals of primary supervision include: review of all clinical work performed by the Trainee, and review of all projects in which the Trainee is involved.

Didactic Training

The goal of didactic training is to provide direct instruction to IBH Trainees. The didactic curriculum has been carefully developed in order to continuously provide the highest quality of training tailored to the specific needs of this training site. Trainings are led or supervised by supervisors or guest speakers. Trainees are expected to attend each didactic training session unless they have an approved absence. In addition to IBH scheduled Didactics, Trainees have the opportunity to attend trainings offered to the medical residents if the topic is of interest or is deemed applicable to IBH training goals.

At a minimum, the weekly schedule will include:
Direct Individual Patient Care: 24 hours
Patient-Centered Groups: 2 hours
Clinical Documentation: 3 hours
Didactic: 1 hour
Individual Supervision: 4 hours
Research and Program Development: 3 hours
Independent Study: 3 hours
