Board Review

Residents review board topics and questions in preparation for both the in-service training examination and the family medicine boards.

Didactic Days

Protected half-day didactics with all five programs covering key educational areas, such as cultural humility, financial literacy, and quality improvement and patient safety.

Ethics and Professionalism

The Chair of the Community Memorial Ethics Committee, who has an advanced degree in bioethics, discusses current ethical challenges in medicine and addresses concepts of professionalism.

Family Medicine Didactics

Faculty organize, supervise, and facilitate extended block didactic sessions designed to review relevant topics particularly important for passage of the certifying board exams. Content includes specialty-specific and general family medicine topics, with a focus on outpatient management of primary care conditions, including structured pediatric, orthopaedic, osteopathic manipulation, dermatology, gynecology, and practice management sessions. Residents receive procedural training for common outpatient procedures, including contraceptive implant insertion, joint injections, skin procedures, point-of-care ultrasound, and IUD insertion as well as many specialty certifications, ranging from Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) to Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). Additionally, residents receive Baby-Friendly Hospital Designation training, certification in medication-assisted opioid use disorder treatment, and education in adverse childhood experiences screening.

Grand Rounds

A resident from each Community Memorial discipline (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Orthopedics and General Surgery) alternates presenting key topics related to patients cared for by a multispecialty audience.

Journal Club

Residents lead sessions facilitated by faculty on primary care topics as well as diversity and the effect of social determinants of health on care. Sessions are focused on the practical application of biomedical statistics and the interpretation and critique of current, evidence-based medical literature.

Morning Report

Residents and faculty meet four mornings a week for a case-based presentation or image review.

OMM Conferences

A faculty member experienced in osteopathic manipulation leads a monthly conference for residents. Sessions consist of a brief didactic session on osteopathic philosophy, anatomy, and osteopathic manipulation techniques, followed by a hands-on session to reinforce appropriate use of these procedures. Use of available resources, including the ACOFP Educational/Video Resources for Teaching OMT Procedures, is encouraged to support teaching sessions and bedside use of OMT.

Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QIPS)

Residents are required to complete IHI Open School courses online prior to Orientation. Our Quality department leads working sessions on QIPS fundamentals and exposure to RCA. The residency program periodically holds sessions to review institutional data and resident and faculty QIPS projects.

Teaching to Teach (PGY1s)

Faculty review principles of effective teaching in an interactive session.

Tumor Board

Oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists meet weekly as a multidisciplinary team to discuss current oncology cases and treatment options.
